RSS is a simple, XML based message format for Web contents. You can access with appropriate software Web contents, without visiting the appropriate web pages. These RSS readers administrate the message entries and indicate you, which messages are new, whether you already read these etc...
Nowadays many web pages offer these news-channels. Naturally you can use such a RSS reader to view and administrate the messages of several sides.
RSS stands for: Really Simple Syndication.
